A detailed guide of both the creative and technical steps used in the process of creating accurate and personalized reproduction wallpaper
“The Homestead” 1888
In 1888, Fitz-Greene purchased and built “The Maples” on “The Homestead” property. Fitz-Greene and Cassie Hallock moved in. The home, situated at 2869 Pond Road, Lake Ronkonkoma, was self-sustaining, with livestock and gardens.
Over time, an octagon barn and several out-buildings, including a chicken coop, ice house, and butcher shop, were added.
In 1995, Katherine Hallock Kenneth donated the homestead to the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society.
Preserving Artwork
Multiple methods exist for historical replica creation, with costs determined by the chosen approach. The goal is to preserve the artwork seamlessly, indistinguishable from the original.
When fragments of the design remain, artists use documentation from the same era to “fill in the blanks.” Other cases may have rolls of it stored away.
Find Pattern Repeat
Fortunately, we had enough pattern to determine the repeat in its entirety. We carefully cut equal sections for scanning, considering the material’s brittleness.
Scan Pattern Repeat
Scanning is the preferred method for reproducing wallpaper, capturing high-resolution imagery without obstacles faced in digital photography. It also ensures accurate color matching.
Create Seamless Pattern
After scanning, aligning the cut pieces in design software begins. Editing is meticulous, redrawing missing elements, adjusting colors, and removing unwanted artifacts.
Pick the Right Color
Matching the color to the original is crucial before printing the rolls for installation. We used a Spectrophotometer for accurate color swatches and made necessary adjustments.
Custom Reproduction Wallpaper
Once all layers are flattened, we create wallpaper rolls using GREENGUARD Gold Inks. The cost for custom patterns varies based on complexity, ranging from $1,000 to $4,000, plus printing costs ($256-$320 per double roll).
Client Testimonial
I am the President of the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society. The society owns one of the last historical homes in the town of Ronkonkoma. This farm house was built in 1888 and is the only home that is open to the public. We do many educational events at the house every year. We were granted the funds to restore the walls in the piano room. When I started to search for a company that could reproduce the wallpaper exactly as the original paper was, I could not find anyone on the island that was willing to do this. Then I heard about MM Digital Designs. They not only worked with us to stay on budget, but we’re there thru every step of the project. The wallpaper is an exact match and when we have tours of the house we receive many compliments about how beautiful the paper has stood the test of time. People are amazed when we show them before and after pictures. Not only would I highly recommend MM Digital. They are the only company I would use again. We have applied for another grant and if we receive it they will be doing another project with us this summer.”
